  • PURPOSE

The purpose of the When I Grow Up Recreation Summer Day Camp Program is to provide a quality program for children during the summer. The Summer Day Camp program provides children with the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, which benefit them emotionally and physically and other creative means of expression and recreation. The goal of Summer Day Camp is to provide the camper with activities that are safe, fun and that allow for positive experiences.

Our program is created to have some parent involvement, but is not mandatory. We highly encourage parent participation, due to our financial literacy part of the program.

If you have any suggestions, please contact the Summer Camp Director, Kevin Conwell (404) 369-2280 or (216) 256-5118

    STAFF

Wake Hustle Grind Summer Camp staff comes from a variety of backgrounds with each one being selected based upon their interpersonal skills as well as their experience with children.

All staff are 18 years or older and volunteers are teenage workers 16-17.

    SUPERVISION

All campers will be under the direct supervision of counselors at all times. No persons under 18 years of age shall be responsible for any group of children. No child will be left unattended indoors or outdoors at any time. Only a parent/guardian or an individual who is on the pickup permission slip may check out campers. Picture identification is required at the time of pick up and will complete a digital sign out.

    DROP-OFF and PICK-UP

If someone on your pick-up list will be picking up your child, they will be asked to show picture identification. There will be NO drop offs after 10:00 am.

Late Pick Up Policy – All summer campers should be picked up by 3:30 pm. Parents, who are late due to unforeseen circumstances (please call), will be issued a verbal warning. To avoid situations like these, we encourage parents to have a backup plan that would allow their child/children (with prior approval) to go home with a neighboring parent or a relative listed as authorized to pick up your child from the facility.

The following procedure will be used for parents who violate the pick-up policy.

First Offense – Late charge of $1.00 per child every minute beginning at 3:45p.m.

Second Offense – Grounds for one-day suspension from program.

Third Offense- Grounds for suspension or dismissal from the program.

Late charges are due no later than the end of the week in which the infraction occurs. Non-payment of late charges may result in suspension of the child/children from the program. We ask parents to be respectful and courteous regarding this policy.

If a child is left and we have not heard from a parent, or if a parent cannot be reached and no one is available to pick up your child, The DFACS office will be asked to come and transport that child to a safe location.

    ABSENCES

If your child is going to be absent from camp for the day, please call the Recreation Department (404) 369-2280 or (216) 256-5118, or bring a note the day before. You may also email info@wakehustlegrind.org .

    MEDICATIONS

Any medication to be administered must be in a prescription-labeled bottle and have a physician signed note stating the type of medication, frequency of dosage and amount to be given. A medication form must be on file. No exceptions will be made to this rule. It is in the best interest of your child to have any medications properly administered.

    EMERGENCY CALLS

    1. Program Director (216) 256-5118

    SICK CHILD

At Summer Day Camp, medical services are minimal. We stock only first aid medical supplies. If a sick child arrives at camp, we will assume the illness began at home and call you immediately for an explanation. PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR SICK CHILD TO CAMP.

This is inconsiderate and can spread an infection throughout the group and the camp. We have no facilities in the camp in which to keep a sick child. We should be able to contact you at home or at the alternate telephone number listed on your child’s application for you to come and take the child home.

Children who come to camp with dressings are encouraged to have them changed during the day. Please inform us by note if the dressing is not to be changed.

OUR PROGRAM DOES NOT PROVIDE MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR ITS PARTICIPANTS. INSURANCE IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE, THE RECREATION DEPARTMENT STRONGLY SUGGESTS YOU OBTAIN IT PRIOR TO CAMP.

    CONCERNS

Any concerns or comments should be addressed with the Camp Director. In the event that this route is not sufficient to meet your needs, contact Kevin Conwell Director at (404) 369-2280.

    LUNCH & SNACKS

Campers will be provided lunch every day at camp.

If your child decides to bring his/her own lunch and snacks, both should be clearly labeled with your child’s name.

An afternoon snack is also needed for the campers.

    When indoors, we walk only.
We do not throw rocks or any other debris outside.
We keep each other’s safety in mind at all times.
Camp provided tee-shirts will also be provided. ( Additional tee shirts may be purchased for $15.00)

Discipline problems will not be tolerated. We strive to provide an atmosphere which is conducive to safety and appropriate behavior while attending Summer Day Camp. Maintaining proper conduct while in the program is the joint responsibility of the children, parents and Summer Day Camp Staff.

The following guidelines will be followed:

1st Offense: Camp Director, and/or Counselor talks to child/children, logs infraction and verbally informs parent.

2nd Offense: Camp Director, and/or Counselor talks to child/children, logs infraction and notifies parent in writing.

3rd Offense: Dismissal of child/children for the remainder of Summer Day Camp depending on the severity of the prior infractions.

Staff and the Camp Director, will handle discipline. The use of corporal punishment is not allowed. The method used is time-out. Time-out is when a child is given time away from an activity, peers, etc., to think about his/her inappropriate behavior and try to develop a positive manner in which to deal with the situation. If time-out does not work, then the parents will be notified.

Time-out is 1 minute per age. Example: If the child is age 7, time-out is 7 minutes.
